Description

Waimea Bay is situated on the North Shore and is one of the most famous beaches on the island. Each year the North Shore attracts the worlds best surfers that come to experience Oahuʻs world class waves. When the swell is big enough in the winter, Waimea Bay erupts with some of the largest waves in the world. Surfers will brave these waves, dropping some 30 to 60 ft. waves. Many visitors and locals alike come to view the spectacle. The bay is a great place to take the family to sunbathe and swim if there is no swell. Be careful of the pounding shore break and if in doubt, do not go out. When the clarity of the water is good in the summer, there is some great snorkeling and freediving. Note that swimming is rarely safe in the winter so do not expect to get into the water in winter months. There is parking right at the beach, but note that it is best to get there early before it fills up. There is overflow parking up the road at the church. Make sure to make a donation with the attendant as they are very nice to open their parking lot for visitors.

Waimea bay means: "sacred water"
