Description

Experience this 12.6-kilometer out-and-back trail near Waialua, Oahu. Known for its challenging nature, it typically takes around 4 hours and 55 minutes to complete. Popular for birdwatching, hiking, and mountain biking, expect to encounter other enthusiasts along the way. The trail remains open year-round, offering scenic beauty regardless of the season. Dogs are permitted and may be off-leash in certain areas.

The trail markings are inadequate. It's advisable to download offline maps for navigation.

Starting from the trailhead across from the parking lot, follow the wide paved road inland. Pass around the chain and veer left at the fork (keeping the concrete hanger on your right). As you approach the base of the ridge, follow the trail as it switchbacks up the slope. At the summit, you'll find a sheltered picnic bench. Proceed inland and ascend the fire road. At a junction near an old fence line, turn right. You'll pass a rusted water tank on your right. Enter the Kuaokala public hunting area. At the subsequent junction, turn left. Then, at the T junction, go left again. Along the way, you'll pass a small water catchment and tank on the right. When you reach the junction with the Kuaokala Trail, bear right and ascend slightly to the ridge rim. From there, you'll overlook the Makua Valley Military Training Area.

Note that the last half mile of the trail prohibits dogs. If you're hiking with a dog, you'll need to turn back slightly earlier for a slightly shorter hike.
