Description
Explore this 9.5-kilometer out-and-back trail near Waianae, Oahu. Renowned for its challenging terrain, it's a favorite spot for hikers and walkers, ensuring you'll likely cross paths with others along the way. Open year-round, the trail boasts timeless beauty, making it a delightful destination at any time. Please note that dogs are not permitted on this trail, so it's best to leave them at home.
Kea'au Middle Ridge lies nestled at the rear of Ohikilolo Valley, accessible via Kea'au Homesteads Road leading to the Our Lady of Kea'au St. Francis Retreat Center. Before reaching the center, parking is available at a turn out, with a dirt road leading straight ahead through a metal gate (closing at 7pm). The trail commences here, following the dirt road into the heart of the valley. Look out for DLNR markers, primarily guiding right turns for about a mile until reaching the end of the 4WD road, where the true hiking trail begins.
Beginning amidst a forested setting, the trail ascends steadily along the middle ridge, adorned with Silver Oaks, Ohia, and Koa trees. Swiftly gaining elevation, it eventually unveils an exposed ridge line, characterized by dikes and karsts. Exercise caution as some sections narrow, with loose rocks underfoot.
Encountering three hill sections and saddles precedes a seemingly impassable wall. However, a contour trail veers right, leading through trees and steeply ascending to another ridge, culminating in the final ascent to the summit. Expect extensive rock scrambling and the use of ropes, with occasional sideways navigation rather than a direct ascent.
Reaching the pinnacle rewards the effort, offering panoramic vistas from Kea'au Ridge, overlooking Makaha Valley. On clear days, views extend northward past Mount Ka'ala, westward to Kaena Point, and southeastward to Ko'olina.
