Description

Explore this 4.0-kilometer out-and-back trail near Waimānalo, Oahu. Typically considered moderately challenging, it takes around 1 hour and 23 minutes to complete. Due to its popularity for hiking and walking, expect to encounter other people along the way. The trail remains open year-round, offering scenic beauty at any time. Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash.


This trail features a great short uphill paved path along sea cliffs leading to an observation deck and lighthouse, providing fantastic views. The entire trail is paved, with no shade, so be sure to bring plenty of water and start early to avoid the heat. There are numerous lookout points for whale watching, and you can descend down a path to get close to the lighthouse.


A parking area provides access to the trailhead. Follow the trail as it ascends the western side of the ridge, then switches back to the north at the top, following the eastern side of the ridge. The trail levels out somewhat but continues to ascend gradually to the summit, where guard-railed lookouts offer panoramic vistas. To return, simply retrace your route.


The Makapuu Point Trail, located within Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, offers outstanding views of Oahu's southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater. At Makapuu Head, the trail's destination, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the windward coast, offshore islets, and the historic Makapuu Lighthouse. Binoculars are recommended for whale watching and bird spotting.


This portion of the island is typically hot, dry, and windy, so wear a hat, sunscreen, and bring plenty of water. Plan for about 2 hours to fully enjoy the hike and the stunning views. Many use this trail for a great workout by running up and down.


Accessibility: The trail surface is paved asphalt, but visitors using wheelchairs, mobility equipment, or strollers may require assistance due to the consistent sections above a 5% grade. There are stairs at the north end of the trail.
